Lifestyle & Family: Portraits of Love

We always love when photographers are able to capture the love between two people, whether newlyweds or those long married, and we imagine it must be extra special to capture that love in one’s own family. In today’s shoot, Megan Small takes advantage of some holiday time with her parents to put together a sweet and memorable photo shoot! Here’s what Megan had to say about photographing Mom and Dad:

“This holiday my parents were lucky to take advantage of my cousin’s beach pad in Marina Del Rey. We were able to spend Christmas in Los Angeles together and divide the time being in town at our apartment and by the beach where my parents were staying. Visiting from the bay area, the parentals were thrilled with the warm So-Cal weather we’ve had the past week, but just our luck the one day we finally got around to taking pictures, of course the fog rolled in. We had a blast shooting though it was quite cold!! My favorite part of shooting couples is just letting them interact with each other, catching those little moments, which in most cases they turn out cute and fun. My mom on the other hand, likes to make faces and not listen, so there were some outrageous funny outtakes that she would kill me if I posted! Before we got too cold outside, I ended up getting some great ones that capture the essence of them perfectly! My parents: the ones who have taught me how to love and be loved.”

Thanks to Megan Small Photography for sharing this very special shoot with us!

Real Wedding: Dahlia Inspiration for a Mansion Wedding

This fun wedding took place at the historic Glen Foerd Mansion in Philadelphia. This elegant location was essential for a wedding that the bride planned perfectly, and Lorraine Daley Wedding Photography was there to capture every  perfect moment. The bride knew instantly she wanted to incorporate dahlias into her wedding, because her groom-to-be bought them on the day he proposed. When her gorgeous strapless wedding dress was also named ” Dahlia”, she knew it was fate. The bride incorporated the flower into her special day by using its soft, feminine touch and vibrant colors. We just love the bright pinks and yellows used in everything from the bridesmaids’ dresses to the tablecloths. The bride was also inspired by the idea of shabby chic decorations. This is clearly seen in the adorable photos of signs and hanging decorations at the ceremony. Just like it’s historic location, this vintage wedding gives us romantic nostalgia!

Thanks again to Lorraine Daley Wedding Photography for a look at this fun, bright Pennsylvania wedding!

Editorial Interview: Featuring Party and Event Guide

Looking for the perfect publication to submit your non-wedding event albums? Look no further! Party and Event Guide features creative and themed events and parties to inspire anyone looking to throw a memorable event.  We interviewed editor Jerry Blackwell for the inside scoop about how this creative publication got started and how your fabulous events can be featured on their blog!

Featuring Jerry Blackwell of Party and Event Guide

Tell us a little about your blog! What are your goals as a publication?

Party and Event Guide (“PEG”) is an online resource for anyone wanting to stay current with party and event trends. People planning occasions use our resource to generate ideas and inspiration for their event. Event Vendors use PEG to see what fellow colleagues are doing in their area and around the world. We post real parties and events, provide inside tips, tricks, and ideas from industry leading professionals, and have a vendor directory for people to find the perfect vendor for their parties. Our goal as a publication is to become a place where customers can go to find tested ideas, love reliable vendors, and share their unique experiences. Find, Love, Share!

How would you describe your editorial style?

Our editorial style is very relaxed and freestyle. A lot of our content is generated by the best vendors in the party and event industry. The portion of our content that is generated by Party and Event Guide staff is relaxed and informal. We want to share great information with you as if you were learning from a friend. The goal is to help our readers improve their next event and feel like Party and Event Guide is their new best friend.

What kinds of submissions are you looking for through Two Bright Lights?  What advice do you have for photographers who would like to be featured?

We love getting submissions from Two Bright Lights. We know that because you are a member of Two Bright Lights, you care very much about your product or service and want to see it featured where it belongs, in the spotlight! PEG is always searching for visually beautiful occasions, creative themed events, and inspirational stylized shoots. Photos of people drinking and dancing are great for a couple shots, but they should not be the majority of the album. Information is also very important. To paint a better picture for our readers we need to know a little bit about your event. Things like, why they choose this location, why they choose these colors, who the party was for, etc. Finally, we need a list of all the vendors that helped make the event happen. This will help get everyone credit and help get your party or event more circulation.

What is the most memorable party that you’ve featured on your blog?

We are a very young blog, but we’ve had many memorable parties already featured. We’ve had a vegetable theme party, a beautiful Egypt engagement party, and a zombie dance. Recently, we had an event planner submit a project they had been working on. It’s titled “Weddings that Pop.” We don’t feature a lot of weddings unless they are themed, but this was an article about being inspired for your next event. The planner explains how every event does not have to be the same and to prove it he made wedding and cocktail dresses out of balloons! Very creative.

How about you! How did you get started as an editor?

The Idea for PEG was born on a roof top in Zurich during a summer vacation for three firefighter friends. Aaron Lopez (CEO – Advertising)  and I were attending an amazing event high above the streets of Zurich. It was a very well put-together event. DJs, models, lighting, mingling, and a breathtaking view. We decided there needed to be a resource for people to plan their own unique nights. I have been a full time wedding photographer with Forever Photography since 2007 in Austin, TX. I knew there were lots of resources out there for weddings and planning weddings, but I’d never heard of one for parties and events. I spoke with a lot of my wedding vendor friends about PEG, and they all said they wanted to be included to expand their events customer base.

If you were to throw the ultimate party what would it be like?

To me the ultimate party would make everyone feel young again. I’m thinking the party would start on a beach in Hawaii. 2PM, photographer and videographer Arrive. There would be lots of activities for everyone: surfing, sunning, paddle boats, snorkel, face painting. At 4PM, under a big beach side hut, guests would enjoy signature crafted tropical drinks, feel ocean breezes, and be amazed by the beautiful talents of Jason Mraz. 5PM, Cirque Du Soleil begins their performance of the history of Hawaii, complete with fire dancing. 6PM -8PM Guests change into designer evening wear, hair and makeup artists provided. 8PM: Hawaiian style dinner stations, Tahitian bands playing, amazing flowers, dessert bar, Ice sculpture. 9PM: Lights down Up lighting up, Photo booth ,  DJ’s till dawn ,  30 minute Starlight sailboat trips every hour. Each Guest would receive a full day spa treatment as a party favor. The night ends with romantic fire work display. I’ll send you an invite!

We’ll be waiting! To learn more about Party and Event Guide, visit their website or check them out on Facebook. And of course, be sure to submit your spectacular events through Two Bright Lights!

Engagement: “Mr. and Mrs. Smith” Goes Sweet

This couple is shattering our cuteness meter! These two are a wonderful mix of silliness, awesomeness and good-looking-ness all swirled together. Daphne and Christopher met on a missions trip in Hawaii, started dating shortly after, and have been together ever since. After much brainstorming, Michelle Chiu Photography and the happy couple couldn’t decide on just one concept and ended up with two fun ideas they wanted to work with for their shoot! The first concept is “Smart and Sexy”: Daphne and Chris love to imitate movie posters, and they wanted to become a certain famous couple. Michelle Chiu told us, “Their hilarious imitations always crack me up, I knew I just had to integrate that into their shoot! For this part of the shoot we centered around a Mr and Mrs. Smith-esque theme! The BB gun’s that Chris ended up borrowing from a friend looked great for this shoot!” We love how much fun Daphne and Christopher have with this fun shoot! Brad and Angelina would be jealous.

The second concept for this engagement shoot was “Vintage Sweet.” Daphne’s name in Vietnamese means “Cherry Blossom,” and she had mentioned how it would mean a lot to her parents if they could somehow incorporate that into the shoot. Michelle Chiu ended up deciding to theme the other half of the shoot vintage-sweet, incorporating the cherry blossoms, flower fields, orange groves, and all sorts of sappy sweetness!

Thanks to Michelle Chiu Photography for sharing this super fun and offbeat engagement via Two Bright Lights!

Real Wedding: West Virginia Farm Wedding

These two photographers planned a picture-perfect ceremony for their own special day. However, this couple let Karlo Photography take the creative lead and  capture their gorgeous outdoor wedding! They shot the groom through the viewfinder of his own camera, and, in another nod to the couple’s profession, they took romantic pictures on a Holga film camera. The ceremony took place at neighbor’s farm in woodsy West Virginia. The farm was decorated with mason jars, hanging window frames, and antique furniture. It transformed the farm into something from another era.  The ceremony was even performed by the bride’s grandfather, Pap! He wore the same vest he wore on his own wedding day so long ago. The couple added their own personal touches, from cool aviator sunglasses to being showered in fragrant lavender at the end of the ceremony. We just love the pictures of the bride’s fabric bouquet and gorgeous accessories! All the small details came together to make this wedding truly personalized and romantic.

Thanks again to Karlo Photography for a look at this rustic outdoor wedding!

Real Wedding: Romance in Wine Country

When we think of Sonoma, we think of rolling hills, blue skies, endless vineyards, and, of course, wine!  Mario and Joy chose this romantic destination for their October wedding, held at Sonoma Mission Inn Golf & Country Club, in the heart of wine country.  Using orange and brown as their color palette, Joy and Mario created an event that is elegant, charming, and perfect for the season.  Diane Askew Photography was there to capture this classic affair.  Here is what she had to say: ”This wedding was such a delight to photograph! Joy was graceful, gorgeous and glamorous; Mario was utterly in love and unwilling to suppress his gratitude and happiness.”

To see more of Joy and Mario’s wedding, visit Diane Askew Photography and click the “recent collaborations” tab where a video collaboration from Diane Askew and Turtle Island Productions is available!

Instead of interrupting the flow of the wedding, Joy chose to have her bride and groom portrait session two days later at BR Cohn Winery.  The results are stunning!  The lush scenery and morning mist give these photos a dream-like quality that is simply enchanting!

Engagement: Finding Southern Spirit in Canada

Just For You Photography flirted with country spirit and brilliant rays of sunlight in these two engagement sessions. Although both photo shoots were in Canada, the rustic backdrops evoked the image of a summertime farm in the South. Not only that, but the creative vision of the photographer and the couples resulted in two totally different photo shoots, despite the common country theme, that helped tell the love story of each individual couple.

Kristen was always a country girl at heart. For her engagement, she returned to her childhood farm to make a new memory with her fiancé Marc. The photo shoot is filled with farms, horses, sunlight, and Kristen’s happy smiles (this last one was Marc’s doing). The couple even showed off their country spirit with cowboy boots and plaid shirts. It was a great way to showcase their love, while also tying in Kristen’s love of horses and the farm. Their rustic theme will undoubtedly continue for their summer wedding, set in the Canadian Rockies!

Just For You Photography also captured Heather and Mike, another happy couple who were looking for a photo shoot with a special backdrop. But instead of a farm with green meadows and fields of wheat, Heather and Mike headed to a local cornfield. The vibrant color of the green leaves, combined with their maze-like pattern, allowed for a super intimate photo shoot. It’s a very different look from the wide open expanses found in the previous farm, but equally as rustic with a southern flair. The couple is scheduled to marry this June in another beautiful location–overlooking the Edmonton River Valley!

Thanks to Just For You Photography for showing off some southern flair with these two rustic engagement photo shoots.

Editorial Interview: Featuring Mary Polizzotti of 7×7

You may have noticed that the Two Bright Lights editorial family has been growing– in recent months, we have added dozens of amazing and prestigious publications as editorial partners! Among these is San Francisco staple 7×7, whose online editor Mary Polizzotti sat with us for an interview.  Read on as she shares some SF wedding secrets, plus tips for submitting your work to be featured in their popular online publication!

Introducing Mary Polizzotti of 7×7.com

Tell us a little about 7×7! We would love to hear a bit about what makes you unique and a bit about your editorial style.

7×7 and 7×7.com are regional publications for the smart and sophisticated city dweller. Our readers are passionate about food, fashion, design, culture, travel, tech, and the arts in the city. We like to provide a service to our readers – what’s the hot new restaurant? What’s the new breakout app? What are the coolest events this week? What’s the latest cocktail trend? All of our articles have a very strong local angle.

We love that you are a San Francisco focused magazine. Could you tell us a bit about what you love about covering all things San Francisco?

I think that people often sink into a routine – they eat at their favorite restaurants, shop at the same stores, do the same things. My goal is to expose the urbanites to all of the truly unique experiences SF has to offer. It’s an amazingly diverse city with so much going on in all facets of life – arts, outdoor activities, the music scene, tech, etc. 7×7 provides relevant information for a native or a visitor to take advantage of the paradise we live in.

Your wedding section is really taking off! Is there something that makes a wedding really “San Franciscan?”

I think location plays a huge part. Couples who choose to marry in San Francisco have gorgeous backdrops to choose from, both inside and out – the Conservatory of Flowers, Stern Grove, City Hall. And that’s just within the city limits. Skip over the bridge and your options are limitless. I also think the weather plays a huge part – you can’t control the fog, so you have to be open and flexible!

You cover a lot of different aspects of the SF life. Could you tell us a bit about a few of your sections? What sort of photographs do you look for in those sections?

The photography on 7×7.com needs to inspire and also spike curiosity. If the headline doesn’t tell the story, the image must. We are well known for our food and drink coverage, so if a photo makes a reader think, “I have to try that!” then we’ve done our job. Same with our travel section or our arts section (to name a couple), we want to inspire a reader to experience something new.

What types of submissions are you looking for in your Two Bright Lights submissions? What kinds of submissions would you like to see more of?

We love seeing any wedding that is in San Francisco, the greater Bay Area, Wine Country, Tahoe, anywhere on the coast, and beyond. Essentially, anywhere in Northern California that might be of interest to our readers. The location is really the main factor in our decision.

How about a bit about you….how did you get started as an editor at 7×7? What do you love most about your job?

I was an editor at a travel startup called NileGuide before 7×7.com and also worked at Lonely Planet for many years. I spent about seven years in sales before making the transition to editorial (and moved to Uganda for a role during that process!). My job is awesome because the digital world is ever changing and you have to stay on top of it all, and I love the challenge. And, of course, I loveSan Francisco.

What are your top three must-do San Francisco activities?

- A bike ride through Golden Gate Park to Ocean Beach.

- An afternoon of perusing through the boutiques in Upper Haight, Hayes Valley,or the Mission (with stops for fuel along the way).

- A progressive evening – cocktails at Churchill or Maven, dinner at Starbelly, Bar Agricole, or even Little Chihuahua, followed by a show at the Great American Music Hall or the Independent.

To find out more about 7×7, visit their website and submit to them online via Two Bright Lights!

Lifestyle & Family: Sweet Sisters

The precious sisters in today’s submission from Allyson Wiley Photography show us that nothing is more heartwarming than the sweet beginnings of sisterhood!  Big sister Kate and baby Taylor team up for this adorable family session shot in the historic farmhouse at Cornerstone Gardens in Sonoma, California.  The combination of childhood sweetness, soft neutral tones, and vintage details (that vanity and mirror!) give these images a simple, timeless quality that are sure to make them keepsakes as the family grows.  We especially love the styling and fashion of the shoot.  How darling are Kate and Taylor in their matching flower headbands?

Styled Shoot: Cherry Blossom Engagement

We are very excited to share this engagement editorial with you! Denise Lin Photography‘s photo shoot was shot mid-April and was inspired by the recent bloom of the Cherry Blossoms! She wanted to create an intimate, romantic, yet luxurious picnic style atmosphere under a canopy of cherry blossom trees in bloom. She incorporated the beauty of the nature surrounding them in Queen Elizabeth Park, Vancouver British Columbia, by adding touches of natural wood and an abundance of beautiful floral arrangements complimenting the soft pinks of the Cherry Blossoms in the background. The table was custom-made so that the couple could sit casually amongst several floral print and lace trim cushions. The table was also set using antique, gold-rimmed bone china plates, gold flatware, and champagne flutes, bringing an “old world” romantic charm. The 1-tiered cake by Anna Elizabeth Cakes was the final touch on their decor and encompassed all the design elements. It had skillfully hand painted flowers and incorporated a gold painted floral branch, which encircled the cake beautifully! We just love all the beautiful contributions that went into this styled shoot!

The calligrapher designed a beautiful card using what they thought to be the perfect quote for this shoot “Once in awhile, right in the middle of an ordinary life, love gives us a fairy tale.” Denise Lin Photography told us, “our models, although appearing as they should be a couple, blended perfectly together almost as though they had been in love forever! We had so many talented vendors collaborating in this shoot, and it was so much fun capturing all their hard work on camera!” Thanks to Denise Lin Photography and all the amazing vendors for sharing this shoot via Two Bright Lights!

Real Wedding: Sunny Vermont Summer Wedding

This gorgeous wedding had a rough start, but a bit of bad weather did not stop this couple from loving every second of their wedding at the Trapp Family Lodge in Stowe, Vermont.  After enduring hail, rain, and thunder at the start, the bridal party decided to change the mood with some impromptu singing. After a hilarious chorus of the Beatle’s “Here Comes the Sun”, the sun finally showed! The sunshine stayed throughout the day and allowed Kathleen Landwehrle Photography to shoot some amazing pictures with outdoor mountain views. We just love the bright blue and yellow hues used to reflect the wedding’s summer feel. From the cake to the flowers, everything about this wedding seemed filled with fun and sunshine!

Bridal Shoot: Rustic and Romantic Bridal Portraits in Utah

Though it looks like a cold day at Utah Lake in today’s submission from Lora Grady Photography, Grady assures us that the atmosphere was far from chilly. “Abish is a stunning bride,” Grady gushed about the barefoot bride, “Her beauty warmed the entire session.” We can’t help but agree! Between Abish’s beauty and the soft neutral tones of the landscape, these images have a warm and romantic quality despite the barren backdrop. Another thing we love? The gorgeous lighting! Grady takes advantage of the radiant light to give the shoot an ethereal feel that is simply breathtaking.
