Oh Lovely Day

What three adjectives best describe the style of your publication?

Vintage-chic, personal, and lovely, of course!

There are so many publications out there, so what makes Oh Lovely Day stand out?

Well, my focus is on the details, projects, real weddings, ideas, etc. that are personal, heartfelt, and make your wedding ‘you’ rather than extravagant, super-styled, expensive weddings (although those are beautiful too, just not my forte). I like to help brides find their own style and voice rather than feeling they have to compete with other weddings out there.  As long as your wedding is ‘you’ it will be beautiful and you and your guests will love it!

What wedding decor and photography trends are you loving right now? Which ones are old hat?

Even though they probably are getting too popular, I have always been a sucker for mason jars! They remind me of where I grew up. I also really love vintage books, typewriter keys, and other nods to literature.  Also, I love that simple engagement and wedding photo sessions are coming back, over the overly styled, overly propped sessions. Photos that are just about the couple are my favorite.  I’m very much over the whole “fake mustache” prop thing!

What sorts of submissions make your heart flutter?

Submissions with rustic details, Anthropologie-inspired elements, flea market finds, DIY projects, and a lovely couple just make my day! I love hearing from photographers what personal touches the couple put on their day so I can add that to the feature as well.

What is your advice for photographers who are submitting for the first time?

Include great detail shots, especially of things the bride did herself. Also shoot the wedding invitation suite- many photographers forget to do this. And include some personal notes about the bride and groom, their day, and things they did for the wedding to make it personal and ‘them.’

Who and what inspires you?

So many things!  I’ll pick things in the wedding industry to narrow it down! Abby of Style Me Pretty inspires me.  She is a mom and wife and has this amazing sense of style and puts out beautiful content daily. I’ve followed SMP for years and have watched it grow from a great wedding blog to THE go-to blog for brides.  It isn’t really a blog, it is the wedding bible! I also really love Jasmine Star’s blog.  She is an amazing photographer, but beyond that she is a talented blogger and writer. She makes me laugh in her blog posts and takes beautiful pictures.

Tell us about how Two Bright Lights fits into your editorial process.

Thanks to Two Bright Lights, I’m getting great real wedding and engagement submissions. I always wanted to feature more real couples, but never got many submissions. I get it, I wanted my own wedding on Style Me Pretty too! But thanks to TBL I get more submissions and can feature more real weddings that fit into the aesthetic of Oh Lovely Day.

What do you love about being an editor?

I love sharing things that inspire me or ideas that I have that could inspire a bride. I love having a creative outlet. And I love having an excuse to stay obsessed with weddings now that my own wedding has long passed!

Check out Chandra’s favorite Two Bright Lights Feature here:

“I have featured so many amazing submissions from TBL! But I think my favorite is this styled shoot that I featured just the other day: http://oh-lovely-day.blogspot.com/2011/06/styled-shoot-charming-diy-wedding.html. It is filled with so much DIY inspiration and pretty eye candy that any bride can do and make their own.  I loved it!”

Be sure to check out Oh Lovely Day on Facebook and Twitter, and submit to them through Two Bright Lights!
